Street Art + Graffiti
Jo was born in Australia, in Crows Nest NSW, then moved to the United States at the age of 3 to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He returned to Australia at 9, living between his Fathers farm on Gundagai Rd NSW and Sydney. At 12 he moved to Auckland New Zealand until returning to Sydney at 16. He has travelled through Europe and China and tries to get back to the U.S and New Zealand to visit as frequently as he can.
To Jo, the letter art in graffiti writing reflects both the socio-cultural and political-economic qualities of the subculture and communicates a great deal about human nature. The aesthetics of graffiti represent the importance of language and understanding, as most non-graffiti writers cannot read graffiti, this stresses a communication barrier if a will to understanding is not present. The virtue of understanding is therefore inherent in graffiti as it is implicit that one must apply some effort to learn to decipher the artworks. By putting in the necessary effort to decode the artists’ work, the style and quality of the work comes further into view.
